The fastest way to get more followers on Instagram is to convert people who already interact with you. Someone who comments on your Reel has done the hard part (they stopped, watched, and typed), and most of them are not following you yet. Give them a reason to follow at that exact moment and a good share will. Everything else in this guide, the profile, the content, the posting rhythm, is there to make that moment happen more often.
Start with the people who comment
Open any Reel that did well and tap through the commenters. On most accounts, the majority are not followers. They came from the Reels feed, reacted, and left. That is the leak.
The fix is a follow gate. When someone comments your keyword (say, GUIDE), the automatic DM asks them to follow you first, then sends the guide. People who wanted the thing almost always follow, and they were already interested in your topic, so they stay. Tem has the follow gate on by default and it is free; the setup is in how to grow on Instagram using Reel comments.
Make Reels that earn a follow, not just a view
A view says "that was interesting". A follow says "I want more of this". Reels that earn follows share three traits:
- They are clearly part of a series. "Part 3 of my ₹10k room makeover" tells the viewer there is more coming and they will miss it unless they follow.
- They deliver one complete, useful thing. A full recipe, a full workout, a full answer. Half a thing gets a scroll; a full thing gets a follow.
- They end with a reason. "Follow for the budget version next week" beats "follow for more".
Fix the profile people land on
Every new follower from a Reel visits your profile first, for about three seconds. Make those seconds count:
- Name field: what you do, not just your name. "Riya | Budget home decor" is searchable and instantly clear.
- Bio line one: who it is for and what they get. Skip the emojis-as-bullets wall.
- Pinned Reels: your three best-performing Reels, so a new visitor sees the good stuff first.
- Highlights: three or four, named by topic, not "Day 1".
Post at a rhythm you can keep
Three Reels a week for six months beats daily for three weeks then nothing. Followers come from the compounding of many Reels, each with a hook and a follow reason, not from one viral hit. When a hit does come, the follow gate makes sure it converts. Timing matters less than consistency; see when to post on Instagram in India for how to find your own window.
Stop doing these
- Follow-for-follow and engagement pods. Those followers never watch, and your Reels get shown to fewer real people as a result.
- Buying followers. Same problem, plus it is against the rules.
- Posting the same content to Reels and Stories and calling it a strategy. Stories are for people who already follow you. Reels bring new ones.
What to measure
Instagram Insights shows follows per Reel. Look at follows divided by reach, not raw follows. A Reel with 20,000 reach and 400 follows is doing something right that a Reel with 200,000 reach and 300 follows is not. Make more of the first kind. And if you run a comment-to-DM setup, the follows gained by the gate are counted per Reel there too.
