Selling on Instagram DM works because a DM is a one-to-one conversation with someone who already showed interest. The best way to sell on Instagram DM is to let people raise their hand publicly (a comment on your Reel) and then move them to a private message with the product link, the price, and one clear next step. Done well, the DM goes out within seconds, and you only join the conversation when a real question comes in.
Why DMs convert better than the link in bio
A link in bio asks the viewer to leave the Reel, open your profile, find the link, and tap it. A DM lands in their inbox with the exact link they asked for. Fewer steps, and it arrives while they are still interested. It also opens a thread, so the person can ask "does it come in black?" and you can answer.
The comment-to-DM sales funnel
- The Reel shows the product in use. Not a catalogue shot. Show the thing doing its job.
- The caption asks for a keyword. "Comment PRICE and I'll DM you the link." One word, in caps, easy to type.
- Each commenter gets a DM automatically. The link, the price, and one line about why it is worth it.
- You handle only the questions. Most people just tap the link. The few who ask something get a human reply from you.
Tem runs steps 2 and 3 for free: pick the Reel, set the keyword, paste the link. Setup takes about two minutes and there is no card and no password. Here is the full setup guide.
What to write in the DM
Keep it to three lines. People read DMs on a phone, in a hurry.
- Line 1: what it is and the price. "The lamp from the Reel, ₹1,299."
- Line 2: the link.
- Line 3: one reason to act now, only if it is true. "Ships in 2 days" or "20 left in this colour".
Skip "Hey there!!" and long greetings. The person asked for a link; give them the link.
Product cards instead of bare links
If your link is an Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra or Shopify product page, the DM can arrive as a card: the product photo, the title, the price, and a button. A card gets tapped more than a naked https:// because the person can see what they are opening. Tem detects product links and sends them as a card automatically when the conversation is open in the thread.
Use a follow gate for products you will sell again
If you sell every week, a follow gate is worth it: before the link is sent, the DM asks the commenter to follow you. People who wanted the link almost always follow, and next week's Reel reaches them for free. Turn it off for one-off launches where every second counts.
Track clicks, not just views
A Reel with 50,000 views and 12 link taps is a worse sales Reel than one with 5,000 views and 300 taps. Use a tool that tracks the tap on every link it sends, per Reel, so you know which content actually sells and make more of that.
Two rules that keep your account safe
- Only DM people who commented or messaged you first. Cold DMs to strangers get accounts restricted.
- Use tools that work through Instagram's official API and never ask for your password.
