Instagram DM automation means a tool sends direct messages on your behalf when something specific happens, most often when someone comments a keyword on your post or Reel. It runs through Instagram's official messaging API, which Meta opened to creators and businesses, so it is allowed when the tool follows the rules: reply only to people who reached out, one private reply per comment, and stay under the sending limits.
This guide covers what it can do, what it should never do, and how to set up your first one in two minutes for free.
What Instagram DM automation can do
- Comment to DM. Someone comments LINK, they get your link in a DM. The most used automation by far.
- Follow gate. Ask the commenter to follow you before the link is sent. Turns commenters into followers.
- Keyword replies in DMs. Someone messages "price" and gets the price list.
- Story reply automation. Someone replies to a story with a word and gets a link back.
- Link tracking. Know who opened the link, per Reel, not just how many saw it.
Automation versus bots: the line that matters
A bot logs into your account with your password, scrapes pages, and sends messages to strangers. That is what gets accounts restricted, and Instagram has gotten good at spotting it.
DM automation through the official API never sees your password. You approve it on Instagram's own permission screen, it can only message people who commented or messaged you first, and you can revoke it in Instagram settings any time. Meta publishes the limits, and a tool that respects them is safe to use.
What Meta's rules require
- The person must have started it: a comment, a story reply, or a DM.
- One private reply per comment, and the comment must be recent (about a week).
- A conversation window: after someone replies to you in the DM, you can keep messaging for 24 hours.
- No mass messaging your follower list. There is no API for that, and any tool claiming it is a bot.
How to set up your first automated DM (free)
- Switch to a professional account if you have not (Settings, Account type). It is free.
- Open Tem and tap Connect Instagram. You approve it on Instagram's screen; no password is typed into Tem, and your account is created automatically.
- Pick a Reel, choose your keyword (LINK, GUIDE, PRICE, or your own), paste the link you want to send.
- Turn it on. Every matching comment gets your DM from then on, automatically.
The free plan sends a set number of automated DMs every day, forever, with no card. When a Reel outgrows that, paid plans start at Rs 99/month in India. There is more on what "free" means in the comment-to-DM guide.
Choosing a tool
Look for: official API (no password), a follow gate, tracked links, and a plain view of what was sent and why. Avoid anything that promises to DM your followers in bulk or to "unfollow non-followers"; those are bots. If you are comparing options, see the free ManyChat alternative for creators.
