Instagram DM marketing works when the person starts it. A comment on your Reel, a reply to your story, a message with a question: each one opens a conversation you are allowed to continue, and a DM sent inside that conversation is read far more than a post is seen. DM marketing fails when it becomes cold outreach, which Instagram detects and restricts. This guide covers the triggers that work, the rules that apply in 2026, and what to write.
The three triggers that work
- Keyword comment on a Reel. "Comment GUIDE" in the caption; the commenter gets the guide in a DM. The highest-volume trigger by far, because a Reel reaches people who do not follow you.
- Story reply. "Reply CODE to this story" for followers; short, time-limited offers.
- Inbound question. Someone asks "price?" in a DM; a keyword reply sends the price list. Works inside any open conversation.
The rules (as of 2026)
- They start it. No tool built on Instagram's official API can message someone who has not commented, replied or messaged you. Tools that claim to are bots, and bots get accounts restricted.
- One private reply per comment, and the comment has to be recent (about a week).
- The 24-hour window. After someone messages you, automated replies are allowed for 24 hours. After that, they have to message again, or you use Meta's opt-in marketing messages, which are limited to roughly one per person per 48 hours.
- Say it is automated where the law requires it (some regions), and always let people reach a human.
What to write
Three lines, on a phone, in a hurry. What it is, the link, one honest reason to open it now. Skip long greetings. In India, write in the language your audience comments in; a Hindi or Tamil reply to a Hindi or Tamil comment converts better than English, and Tem ships reply templates in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi.
Make the DM do more than deliver
- Follow gate. Ask the commenter to follow you before the link is sent, and use a tool that checks with Instagram rather than taking their word for it. New viewers become followers, so the next Reel reaches them free.
- Product cards. If the link is a product page, send it as a card with the image and price; it gets tapped more than a bare URL.
- Tracked links. Know which Reel produced opens, not just comments, so you make more of what sells.
Measuring DM marketing
Per Reel or story: triggers (comments or replies), DMs delivered, links opened, replies with a question, and sales or bookings. If opens are low, the message needs work. If triggers are low, the ask is not clear. There is more on the selling side in how to sell on Instagram DM, and on leads in Instagram lead generation without ads.
What gets accounts restricted
Cold DMs to people who never contacted you, the same message to hundreds of people in an hour, "follow for follow" schemes, and any tool that asks for your Instagram password. Stay inside the official API, reply only to people who reached out, and keep the copy human.
