How to Add a YouTube Link on Instagram (Bio, Story, and Automatic DM)

23 September 2026 · 5 min read

To add a YouTube link on Instagram you have three real options: put it in your bio (Edit profile, Links), add it to a story with the link sticker, or send it automatically in a DM to anyone who comments a keyword on the Reel that teases the video. Links in captions and comments are not clickable, so "link in comments" does not work. Of the three, the DM route gets the most clicks by a wide margin, because the link lands in the viewer's inbox while they still want to watch. Here is each one.

1. YouTube link in your Instagram bio

  1. Profile, Edit profile, Links, Add external link.
  2. Paste your channel URL or the video URL. Title it "YouTube" or "Latest video".
  3. You can keep up to five links; put the channel first and swap the video link when a new one is out.

Best for: your channel as a whole. Weak for: a specific new video, because viewers of a Reel rarely visit the profile.

2. YouTube link in an Instagram story

  1. Create a story, tap the sticker icon, choose Link.
  2. Paste the video URL, tap Customise sticker text and write "Watch the full video".
  3. Place it where a thumb can reach it, and say it out loud or on screen too.

Best for: existing followers, the day the video goes up. Stories disappear in 24 hours, so add it to a highlight if the video matters.

3. Send the YouTube link automatically to people who comment

Post a Reel with the best 20 seconds of the video. Caption: "Full video on YouTube, comment VIDEO and I'll DM you the link." When someone comments VIDEO, an automatic DM sends them the YouTube link. No profile visit, no searching for the right link.

Two things happen that the bio cannot do: the comment pushes the Reel to more people, and the link arrives in seconds while the person is still interested. Add a follow gate and most of those commenters follow you as well.

Tem does this free through Instagram's official API. Pick the Reel, set VIDEO as the word, paste the YouTube link, and it is live in two minutes; the walk-through is in how to auto-DM people who comment on your Reel. Every link is tracked, so you can see how many people actually went to YouTube from each Reel.

FAQ

Can I put a YouTube link in an Instagram caption?

You can paste it but it will not be clickable. Use the bio, a story link sticker, or send it in a DM to people who comment a keyword on the post.

How do I add a YouTube link to my Instagram story?

Create a story, tap the sticker icon, choose Link, paste the YouTube URL, and customise the sticker text. The link sticker is available to every account.

How do I send my YouTube link automatically on Instagram?

Use a comment-to-DM tool: set a keyword like VIDEO on the Reel that teases the video, and each commenter gets the YouTube link in a DM within seconds. Tem does this free.

Does sharing YouTube links hurt Instagram reach?

Links in the bio, stories, or DMs do not reduce reach. What matters for reach is whether people watch and engage with the Reel itself.
