Instagram DM automation tools all do the same core job, reply to a keyword comment with a private message, and differ in everything around it: setup time, what the free plan includes, whether links are tracked, whether there is a follow gate, and what currency the bill comes in. This comparison is written for creators and small businesses in India choosing their first tool, and it is honest about where the big platforms are still the better pick.
The seven things that matter
- Official API, no password. If the tool asks for your Instagram password, stop reading. Everything else on this list assumes an official connection.
- Time to first DM. Can a new user go from sign-up to a live automation in under five minutes without building a flow?
- Follow gate. Ask commenters to follow before the link is sent. This is the difference between "sent 500 DMs" and "gained 300 followers".
- Tracked links. Knowing who opened the link, per Reel, is the only way to know which content sells.
- Free plan that stays free. A daily allowance that resets beats a monthly cap or a trial that expires.
- Local pricing. Rupees and UPI in India; a US-dollar plan on a card is a real barrier for most creators here.
- Plain reporting. Comments, DMs sent, links opened, per Reel. If you need a dashboard tutorial, the dashboard is wrong.
Features you will probably not use
Multi-step flow builders, contact tagging, broadcast lists, CRM and email integrations, AI chat agents. These are built for businesses running a support inbox with a team. If you are a creator whose problem is "300 people commented LINK", they add setup time and cost without adding DMs.
The two kinds of tool
Full platforms (ManyChat, Chatfuel and similar)
Strengths: flows, integrations, team inboxes, broadcasts to opted-in subscribers, WhatsApp and Messenger in the same place. Right for: agencies, e-commerce brands with a support team, anyone who needs a CRM connected. Watch for: contact-based pricing in dollars, a flow builder you have to learn, free tiers with contact caps. Check their pricing pages for current numbers; they change often.
Comment-to-DM tools (Tem)
Tem is built for the one job. Which Reel, which word, what do they get; live in about two minutes. Free to start with a daily allowance of DMs, no card. Follow gate on by default, every link tracked per Reel, product links sent as a card with image and price, and use-case templates (link, product, guide, discount code, booking, giveaway) so you never start from a blank message. Paid plans for unlimited DMs start at Rs 99/month in India with UPI, and a few dollars globally. It does not have a flow builder, broadcasts, or a team inbox, on purpose. There is a fuller comparison in a free ManyChat alternative for creators.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What happens on the free plan when a Reel goes viral? (Daily reset, or locked out until next month?)
- Does it show me link opens, or only "sent"?
- Can I remove it from Instagram in one tap if I stop using it?
- Is the price in my currency, and can I pay without a credit card?
Switching or trying two at once
Automations are per post, so you can run a new tool on your next Reel while the old one keeps running on older ones. Do not put two tools on the same Reel; they will both reply and people get two DMs. When you settle, remove the old tool under Instagram Settings, Website permissions, Apps and websites. For what any of these tools is allowed to do, read Instagram DM automation: what is allowed.
