Your Instagram bio has 150 characters and about three seconds of attention from someone who just watched your Reel. What to put in an Instagram bio as a creator comes down to four lines: who it is for, why you, one next step, and what to comment to get your thing. Most bios have the first three. The fourth is the one that turns visitors into DMs and followers, and almost nobody uses it.
Line 1: who it is for
Not your name (that is above the bio). What you make and for whom. "Budget home decor for renters" beats "Home | Decor | Life". Use the name field for the searchable version: "Riya | Budget Home Decor".
Line 2: why you
One proof point that is true and specific. "Featured in Homegrown" or "300+ rooms styled" or "Ex-Zara visual merchandiser". If you have nothing yet, skip it; a fake credential costs more than a missing one.
Line 3: one next step
Instagram lets you add up to five links, but the bio text should point at one. "Shop my room finds ๐" or "Free 7-day decor plan ๐". One ask, one link.
Line 4: what to comment
"Comment LINK on any Reel and I'll DM it." This line does two things. It tells a new visitor how to get what they saw, and it teaches your audience the habit so every future Reel gets keyword comments without you explaining each time. It only works if the DM actually arrives: Tem watches your Reels for the word and sends each commenter the link automatically, free. Setup is in how to auto-DM people who comment.
Three templates
- Creator with a freebie: "Budget decor for renters ๐ / 300+ rooms styled / Free 7-day plan ๐ / Comment PLAN on any Reel for the DM"
- Creator selling products: "Everyday skincare, India-made ๐ฟ / Dermat-reviewed / Shop ๐ / Comment SHOP on a Reel, I'll DM the link"
- Coach or service: "Helping first-time founders raise ๐ฎ๐ณ / 40 rounds closed / Book a call ๐ / Comment CALL on any Reel"
Mistakes that cost follows
- A wall of emoji bullets. It reads as noise on a small screen.
- "DM for collab" as the only ask. Brands will DM anyway; your audience needs a different door.
- Five hashtags in the bio. They do not help search and they push your real lines down.
- A link with no label. "Link below" tells nobody what they get.
Pair the bio with a profile that earns the follow: pinned Reels and a clear topic. See how to get more followers on Instagram.
