A WhatsApp link for Instagram is a click-to-chat URL in the form https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX, where the number is your full international number with no plus sign, spaces or dashes. Tapping it opens a WhatsApp chat with you. You can add a pre-filled message so the first line is written for them, put the link in your Instagram bio or a story sticker, and send it automatically in a DM to anyone who comments on your Reel. Here is each step.
1. Build the link
- Basic:
https://wa.me/919876543210(country code 91, then the 10-digit number). - With a pre-filled message:
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20reel. Spaces become%20and commas%2C; any URL encoder does this for you. - WhatsApp Business: Settings, Business tools, Short link gives you the same thing with a default message.
Test it on your own phone before you post it. A wrong digit opens a chat with a stranger.
2. Add it to your Instagram bio
Edit profile, Links, Add external link, paste the wa.me URL and title it "WhatsApp me" or "Order on WhatsApp". Business accounts can also add a WhatsApp contact button under Contact options, which is worth doing as well.
3. Put it in a story
Add the link sticker to a story, paste the wa.me link, and label it "Chat on WhatsApp". Good for a limited-time offer that existing followers should act on today.
4. Send it automatically to people who comment on a Reel
This is where most orders come from for small businesses. In the caption, write "comment ORDER and I'll send you my WhatsApp". When someone comments, an automatic DM sends them the wa.me link. They tap once and are in a WhatsApp chat with you, with the first message pre-filled ("Hi, I want to order the blue kurta from your reel").
Tem does this free: pick the Reel, set the keyword, paste your wa.me link. Every link is tracked, so you see how many commenters actually opened WhatsApp, per Reel. Setup is in how to auto-DM people who comment on your Reel. If you want them to follow you before the link is sent, turn on the follow gate; see how to sell on Instagram DM for when that is worth it.
Tips that save you messages
- Pre-fill the product name. Make a different wa.me link per Reel with the product in the text, so you know what they want before they say it.
- Keep the bio link generic ("Hi, I have a question") and the Reel DM links specific.
- Reply fast on WhatsApp. The link gets them there in seconds; a two-hour wait loses the sale.
