Automated Comments on Instagram: What Is Safe, What Gets You Restricted, and What to Do Instead

23 September 2026 · 6 min read

There are two things people mean by automated comments on Instagram, and they could not be more different. An Instagram auto commenter posts comments from your account on other people's posts ("Nice pic! Check my page"); that is a bot, it needs your password, and it is the fastest way to get an account restricted. Automatic replies to comments on your own posts, where someone comments a keyword and gets a private reply with your link, run through Instagram's official API and are safe, allowed, and free. This guide explains both, and why the second one is what actually grows an account.

Auto commenters: how they work and why they fail

An auto commenter logs into Instagram as you, finds posts by hashtag, and leaves a comment from a list. Instagram's systems detect this pattern well: identical comments, unnatural speed, activity while you are asleep. The results, in order: your comments get hidden, then "action blocked", then a restricted account, then a ban. Meanwhile the comments themselves bring nothing; nobody follows an account because it wrote "Great content!" under a stranger's post.

Automatic replies to your own comments: how they work

You connect a tool through Instagram's own permission screen (no password). You pick a post and a keyword. When someone comments that keyword, the tool sends them a private reply, a DM, with your link, within seconds. Optionally it first asks them to follow you. Meta built the API for exactly this; the rule is one private reply per comment, only to people who commented, within Instagram's limits.

Why the second kind grows an account

Tem does this free: pick the Reel, set the word, paste the link, done in two minutes. The setup is in how to auto-DM people who comment on your Reel.

Public auto-replies, carefully

Some tools can also post a short public reply under the comment ("Sent you a DM!"). Used sparingly it reassures other viewers that the keyword works. Used on every comment it looks robotic. If you turn it on, keep it short and vary it, and answer real questions yourself.

How to tell a safe tool from a bot in ten seconds

  1. Does it ask for your Instagram password? Bot.
  2. Does it offer to comment on, like, or follow other accounts for you? Bot.
  3. Does it connect through an Instagram permission screen you can revoke in Settings? Safe.
  4. Does it only act on comments and messages people send to you? Safe.

FAQ

Is using an Instagram auto commenter against the rules?

Yes. Posting automated comments on other people's posts violates Instagram's terms, is detected reliably, and leads to action blocks and restricted accounts. Automatic private replies to comments on your own posts, through the official API, are allowed.

Can I automatically reply to comments on my own Instagram posts?

Yes. A comment-to-DM tool sends a private reply to anyone who comments a keyword on your post, through Instagram's official API. Tem does this free.

Do automated comments help growth?

Comments you post on strangers' posts do not; nobody follows an account for a generic comment. Comments people leave on your Reel, answered automatically with something useful, do: they push the Reel further and turn commenters into followers.

What is 'action blocked' on Instagram?

A temporary restriction Instagram applies when it detects bot-like activity from your account, such as rapid automated comments, likes or follows. Stop the tool causing it and it usually lifts within a day or two.
