There are two things people mean by automated comments on Instagram, and they could not be more different. An Instagram auto commenter posts comments from your account on other people's posts ("Nice pic! Check my page"); that is a bot, it needs your password, and it is the fastest way to get an account restricted. Automatic replies to comments on your own posts, where someone comments a keyword and gets a private reply with your link, run through Instagram's official API and are safe, allowed, and free. Auto commenters: how they work and why they fail
An auto commenter logs into Instagram as you, finds posts by hashtag, and leaves a comment from a list. Instagram's systems detect this pattern well: identical comments, unnatural speed, activity while you are asleep. The results, in order: your comments get hidden, then "action blocked", then a restricted account, then a ban. Meanwhile the comments themselves bring nothing; nobody follows an account because it wrote "Great content!" under a stranger's post.
Automatic replies to your own comments: how they work
You connect a tool through Instagram's own permission screen (no password). You pick a post and a keyword. When someone comments that keyword, the tool sends them a private reply, a DM, with your link, within seconds. Optionally it first asks them to follow you. Meta built the API for exactly this; the rule is one private reply per comment, only to people who commented, within Instagram's limits.
Why the second kind grows an account
- Comments on your Reel push it to more people. Asking for a keyword produces comments, and your reply to each one is a second engagement on the same Reel.
- Every commenter is a lead. They wanted something; the DM delivers it and opens a conversation.
- The follow gate turns them into followers. Most commenters on a Reel that reaches new people are not following you yet.

Public auto-replies, carefully
Some tools can also post a short public reply under the comment ("Sent you a DM!"). Used sparingly it reassures other viewers that the keyword works. Used on every comment it looks robotic. If you turn it on, keep it short and vary it, and answer real questions yourself.
How to tell a safe tool from a bot in ten seconds

- Does it offer to comment on, like, or follow other accounts for you? Bot.
- Does it connect through an Instagram permission screen you can revoke in Settings? Safe.
- Does it only act on comments and messages people send to you? Safe.
