Yes, Instagram has a built-in comment to message automation. It lives in Meta Business Suite under Inbox, Automations, and it is free. When someone comments one of your chosen keywords on a post, Meta sends them a message you wrote. For a creator who gets a handful of "link?" comments a week, it may be all you need. This guide shows how to set it up, what it cannot do as of September 2026, and how to decide whether you need a dedicated tool.
How to turn it on
- Open business.facebook.com on a computer and pick your Instagram professional account.
- Go to Inbox, then Automations.
- Choose the comment-to-message automation (Meta has renamed it a few times; look for "comment" in the name).
- Pick the post, add your keywords, write the message, and turn it on.
Where it stops (as of September 2026)
- Five keywords, exact match. "LINK" matches, "link pls" or "LINK 🙏" may not, depending on how strictly Meta matches.
- Desktop only to set up. There is no way to create or edit it from the Instagram app on your phone, which is where most creators post from.
- Delayed sends. Creators report the message arriving many minutes after the comment. The person who commented has usually scrolled on.
- No follow gate. It cannot ask the commenter to follow you before sending.
- No tracking. You see that a message went out, not whether the link was opened.
- One plain message. No product card, no variation, no second step.
When the built-in tool is enough
If you post occasionally, get a few keyword comments per post, and the link is not time-sensitive, use it. It is free and it is Meta's own, so there is nothing to connect.
When you need more
The moment a Reel takes off, three things matter that the built-in tool does not do: the DM has to arrive while the person is still interested (seconds, not minutes), you want the commenter to follow you first so the next Reel reaches them, and you want to know which Reel produced link opens, not just comments.
Tem is built for that moment: set up from your phone in two minutes, the DM goes out within seconds, the follow gate checks with Instagram whether they follow you, every link is tracked per Reel, and product links go out as a card. It runs on the same official Instagram API as Meta's own tool, so nothing about your account changes. Free to start, no card. See how to auto-DM people who comment on your Reel for the setup, and how comments become followers for the follow gate.
Can you run both?
Not on the same post. Two automations answering the same comment means two DMs, which looks like spam. Use the built-in tool on older posts if you like, and a dedicated tool on the Reels that matter.
